Historically the construction of Ram Setu is very popular in Hinduism. Made by monkeys, the Ram Setu still exists between the sea border of India and Sri Lanka. It can be seen and experienced by visiting the southernmost corner of India. Beautifully constructed Ram bridge is very popular in Ramayana.
Adam’s Bridge is also called as Rama Setu or Rama’s Bridge. Lord Shri Ram’s Vanara Sena, which was an army of monkeys constructed the Ramsetu according to Ramayana. The Adams Bridge has various limestone shoals in the middle of Pamban Island, which is also called as Rameswaram Island. It is situated in the southeastern coast of India (Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka’s northwestern coast.
As per the Hindu mythology, it was constructed when Ravana took Sita Mata to Sri Lanka, forcefully. And Shri Ram’s Setu became a path to reach Sri Lanka. Apart from Hanuman, no other human being, monkeys and others could fly in air. Thus, it became necessary to make a way to cross the large ocean to reach the other side. Shri Ram signed each stone from his name and monkeys put down all the stones in the sea. Due to the lord Ram’s grace, no stone sank inside the water.
Ram Setu: Constructed in Treta Yuga for A Great Battle
A long time back, during Treta Yuga, a great battle happened on the earth between the force of truth and the force of evil. During that point of time, each varana (ape man) worked hard to build the vast ram bridge. At the end, the victory of truth over evil occurred with the help of Ram Sethu.
If the bridge was not constructed, it might be a really tough task to reach Sri Lanka with a huge army of monkeys.
Floating Stones Over The Sea: Ram Setu Bridge
Reader may recall the controversy over the Shri Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) which was constructed by Lord Ram between India and Sri Lanka. There is also a strong belief that Hanuman with an army of monkeys brought a few floating stones and used them for constructing this bridge.
It is mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana about Rama Sethu. The detailed information of such types of floating stones is given in the Tulsidas’ Ramayana. Hanuman wrote “Shri Ram” on each stone. It was believed that with the grace of Shri Ram, even stones attained the salvation. A few scientists also said that the nature of such types of stones was floating. It means that they can float anyways. But nothing is yet proved by them.
Shri Ram Prayed to Construct Ram Setu
When the army of monkeys came across to the huge sea, they were not expecting to cross it. Then Shri Ram prayed to the sea guard for seven days and seven nights. After that, the sea guard appeared and said to write “Shri Ram” on stones and they will not sink in the water. Thereafter, Hanuman with monkeys started the bridge construction and successfully completed the task.
